It's a "Tarty" Christmas

My full on obsession for everything plaid and tartan spilled over into my crafty fun last night. I had purchased this plaid material from my local Fabricland about a month ago when they had their grand opening. Brett Wilson was there as he is an owner/part owner? Of the new revamped mall. I went there mostly to meet him and chickened out. That's a whole nother story!!! Anyhoo ... I had other plans for this material but had this brilliant idea to make a ornament with it. All I did was cut a 10 x 10 inch piece of it, wrapped it around a foam ball (Dollarama arts and crafts section) and gathered it around the ball tightly. Tied some various ribbons, a bow and a jingle bell around the middle area and voila! A tarty Christmas ornament. My one boo boo is I should have inserted a piece of twine into the ball for hanging, PRIOR, to wrapping the fabric around it.

I'm going to do a small tutorial on this tomorrow so stay tuned but for now here she is! Next year full on plaid decorated tree!!

Happy holidays from me to you.

I dream of crafting

First of all I want to thank all the soldiers who fought for us so we could have our freedom. The events that recently occurred in Canada shook us up. While some may look at Canada as a weak country we are far from that. Our response to those events made me feel even more proud to be Canadian. We are strong, resilient, and when tragedy hits us at home it makes us even stronger.  I am thankful.

I literally dreamt about tags last night. I think that's a sign that you're on craft overload but I'm having so much fun!!!

Today my projects were to finish up on some tags I started yesterday. Poinsettia was the theme for these beauties.

Next it was mini tag time. After having done most of the prep work last night all I had to do was stamp and assemble. Here is a sample.

I made 4 more larger size tags tonight with my TH snowman die. Will post pics tomorrow.

Thank you for stopping by!

Christmas Groove

This is my happy place. Creating from my heart, sitting at my workspace with a huge mess around me. Creative chaos!! No matter how much space I have I always end up working in about a 3 foot by 3 foot space. I seem to like it that way haha.

So my Christmas crafty juices are in high gear right now and I'm taking full advantage of it. My first projects are tags and I sure had fun making these beauties.

The Tim Holtz star die is one of my fav's. So versatile! These pre patterned tags are so great if you just want to focus on the embellishments.

Next I used a Pinterest post for "Pinspiration". How fun are these cute little rustic candy canes??? Can you say shrink plastic, TH stamps, Walmart ribbon and cheap cheap plastic candy canes , jingle bells and tule? Yes that's all it took folks. Well my trusty glue gun also came in handy 😉

So easy and quick to make but be warned. With the shrink plastic they tell you to sand the back of it. Don't do it because it will create a hazy background behind your stamp (as shown).

Hope you enjoy! Happy crafting.

National card making crop

I was lucky enough to hang out with my friend Deb from All ways Scrapbooking in Salmon Arm along with a gang of other ladies for National card making day. It was a very productive day/evening despite all the stories and chit chat that us ladies brought to our tables. It was so much fun!!! Deb has an amazing store out of her home in Salmon Arm and also sells online at www.allwaysscrapbooking.com. Please check her out.

Here are some of the fun cards I worked on with a little bit of inspiration from Pinterest on the hearts cards.

Love is in the air

Summer in the Okanagan brings an abundance of weddings to our area. From the beautiful sweeping views in the vineyards to the majestic mountain tops it really is a wonderful place to tie the knot.

My next two projects were for a friend who was attending two weddings in the next two weeks. Two cards, two hours was my goal but how do you put a time limit on creativity?? That's just plain crazy! So I went over the limit by just a couple of hours ... Awww shuck;-)

My goal was to create two very different cards and I definitely accomplished that.

Card #1 - light and earthy

Card #2 - elegant drama

Ode to my papa

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there.

My project today was inspired by Shari over at the Simon Says stamp blog (see link below). I took her post and added that masculine touch to it using Graphic 45's "A proper gentleman" collection.  I love how all these fabulous patterns work together to create something fluid.

Thank you Shari for the inspiration for my Fathers Day card.

Enjoy!

Be you

That's a statement in itself. Be you. So many of us, including me, at certain times of our life feel the need to be what someone else wants. Does it make us happy, does it make you feel more deserving of that persons love. Plain and simply. No it does not.

When I saw this paper line at my local Michaels I knew it would inspire me to create something different. Something that was me and something that spoke of who I feel I need to be to achieve my dreams.

The base of this project is a chipboard surface I found at my local dollar store. I gesso'd it and then applied a second layer of jesso through a stencil to give it a textured surface.

I inked the background with Tim Holtz acrylics and distress ink to bring out the texture. I used the Authentique paper line called Be(you)tiful. So cute!! I covered the chipboard letters with the paper and used the stickers from that line as well. A little top off with some Tim Holtz ribbons, twine and lace.

ATC Fun!!! Hoppy Easter.

Okay so I have been wanting to make these for quite some time and today was the day! Nothing like starting something at 8:30 in the evening when you have that urge to create. I've been slowly getting into ATC over the past 6 months and I have to say I was a bit worried before I started. I thought " how do I fit my creativity onto such a small thing!" So I did one and realized that: a) it's not about the size it's about overcoming my fear of not being able to succeed at something because it was new to me. b) art comes in many different forms, sizes and shapes and it's about letting your imagination flow free. So I did and I sure am having fun with it!  You can see my ATC's on Pinterest and Instagram (see link on my main page).
These were a lot of fun to make and I have to thank the wonderful person who had really great instructions on her blog. Barbara and here is the link to her project.

I dream of Paris

For quite some time now I have had a mild obsession with everything Paris.  Whether it be the glorious architecture, the Eiffel Tower or just the over all feeling it conveys it has me hooked.  I hope that one day I will be able to pay it a visit so I can see it for myself.  For now I will admire it from afar and admire it I do.

When Tim Holtz came out with his Fleur de Lis & Eiffel Tower Alterations die I fell in love.  I knew this die would take me to new places on my creative journey.  Yesterday it was the inspiration for my tag.  This was one of those projects where I couldn't help but be excited the whole way through because my creative journey just grew and grew on this one.

I'll try to keep my post short but I am going to include lots of picture on this one so you can see all my techniques and products that I used and there was a lot for such a small project.  Here we go:

First off I started with a blank tag and a pretty little piece of paper from Recollections.  I glued the paper down using Tombow Multi Mono liquid glue.  This is my go to glue for almost everything.
Once the paper was glued down onto the tag I prepped my modeling paste mixture on my craft mat.  I used about a Toonie size dollop of the modeling paste and a dime size dab of my black acrylic paint.
As you can see I didn't mix it completely.  I like to have variations in the paste when I apply it over the stencil.
Once the paste was ready I taped down my stencil over my tag.  In this project I used Memory Box - Diamond stencil.  These are awesome size stencils for tags.
I smeared the paste mixture over my tag using a Size 1 craft palette knife.  Some areas I left thicker than other to create more dimension.
After removing the stencil this is what it looks like.  I waiting "patiently" for it to dry.  I prefer not to use a heat tool to dry it as I find they tend to warp my paper and I wanted this to stay very flat.
Next I pulled out my Tim Holtz Alternations Fleur de lis & Eiffel Tower die.  Love, Love, Love this!  I used a very heavy chip board in black to cut out as I wanted the tower to be sturdy.  You can find this chipboard at most craft/scrapbooking stores.  I purchased this from my local store out of their bulk supply.  Notice that I only cut out half of the fleur de lis.  I did that on purpose because I knew the tag didn't have enough room for both pieces on it so I only cut out half.
I applied a thin layer of Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Brushed Pewter to the cut out pieces.
Next apply a layer of Stampendous Frantage embossing enamel in Aged Scarlet.   Note that this lovely stuff likes to fly off your paper when you apply your heat gun to it.  I find it helps to apply a fairly thick layer of Emboss It by Ranger to the surface so it grabs the enamel better.  You could even tap it into the embossing product so that it really grabs. For those new to embossing, this product is applied prior to adding your enamel to the surface.  Heat with your tool gun and it will melt to your paper.  Careful with this step because you don't want to over heat it and see smoke coming off your paper.  Yes I have done that :-)
Next I prepped the metal bits with acrylic paint and some glossy accents.  The cute little gold frame came from Dime Store Emporium and the wander tag is by Tim Holtz.  The clock bottle cap I will talk about more in the next step.  Apply a sufficient layer of Tim Holtz Distress paint in Broken China to both pieces.  One step I missed taking a picture of was when I also applied a thin layer of Black chalkboard paint to both pieces.  I found this at my local dollar store.  Once that was dry I filed off some of the paint to give it a grungy look.
The lovely little bottle cap in behind the clock I believe is from Graphic 45.  Sorry, I am one of those people who repackages their products once I get them home from the store so I lost the packaging.  The clock face and tiny little gears were given to me by my lovely friend Barb.  She purchased these when she was traveling so I unfortunately do not know where they came from but you can find this type of thing on Ebay.  Just search for "watch parts".  The steps in this are as follows: I enameled the bottle cap with Stampendous Frantage embossing enamel in Aged Aqua.  I took my Emboss It dabber from Ranger and dabbed embossing all over the cap.  I then sprinkled the embossing enamel over the cap and then heat set it with my heat gun.  Use tweezers to hold the cap, she gets hot hot hot!  Step 2 I placed the watch face into the cap and filled it with Glossy Accents by Ranger.  Once filled I dropped in a few gears and miscellaneous watch parts.  I let this set over night.
The "PARIS" letters are from Tim Holtz.  I took these and glued them onto a piece of paper with Tombow Multi Mono Liquid glue.  Once it was set I cut around the letters until it looked like the above picture.
Next step was to prep my ribbon for the top of the tag.  I used two types of May Arts Ribbon.  The white ribbon, as shown above is great for stamping on.  I stamped the word "magnifique" onto the ribbon repeatedly with Archival Ink by Ranger.  This makes it permanent.
Once my words were stamped I colored up the ribbon with Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Peacock Feathers and Crushed Olive.  I dabbed the color on my craft mat and laid the ribbon into the color.  First I did the Crushed Oliver all over and then added a little bit of the Peacock Feathers for accent.  I crumpled the ribbon really well when it was wet so it would looked more aged.  I also added in another piece of ribbon behind all the embellishments.  This was from Michael's dollar bins and I colored it with Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Peacock Feathers as well.

Once all the pieces were prepared I built the tag in layers.  First was the stained ribbon.  Then the Eiffel tower and Fleur de Lis.  I attached these using my Tim Holtz mini attacher (this is the most amazing tool ever). I then attached the feather.  I glued down the frame, Paris and bottle cap with Zip Dry glue.  Great stuff but use in a well ventilated area as this glue has a strong odor.  Next I attached the metal "wander" tag and a tiny little key (in behind) onto the ribbon.  I tied the ribbon onto the tag and voila!  Tres chic!

This was a lot of fun.  I hope you enjoy looking at it and following my tutorial!  As always please feel free to ask me any questions about my steps or products that I used.

Head on over to the Simon Says Stamp Blog for Monday's challenge entitled Journey.  This is my take on the challenge.

After looking at the picture up on my blog I decided I needed to move the feather to the middle center of the tag to fill up the empty space.  I like it much better there :-)

Spring is in the air

It's so wonderful to see that sunshine showing it's fabulous face after a long, long winter.   I love the snow but sometimes a gal just needs bright sunshiney days to lift the spirit.  While I may not blog a lot I am always creating something.  My creative thoughts never leave my side which I am so thankful for.

This past weekend I decided I needed to spring up my art journal a bit.  I found some lovely paper at Michael's by Recollections that had cherry blossoms on it.  I am a huge fan of cherry blossom trees and I so wish we had more of them in my city.  My journal started out with some left over ink on two of my pages and I wasn't quite sure where I was going to go with it but this is what I did:

I added layers and layers of ink, sprays and paints.  I used Black chalkboard paint, Distress Paints in: Peeled paint, Mustard Seed, Tarnished Brass and Broken China. I also used Dylusion sprays in: White Linen and Vibrant Turquoise.  Lastly but not leastly I used Distress Stains in: Brushed Pewter and Crushed Olive.  I literally kept adding layers of these until I got to the result I wanted.  I used my fingers to smear the color all over the pages.  Lastly I used Kroma Crackle to give my pages a bit of texture.

The final little bit of background was added using the Memory Box stencil: Diamond and Faber Castell Gelato in Bubble Gum.

Now to the flowers.  The paper I used for the majority of the flowers is from Recollections and is called Watercolor Cherry Blossom.  This is available at Michael's.  I "fussy" cut these flowers/branches from the paper and glued down to the page with Tombow mono glue.  I wanted a bit more dimension in the flowers so I freehand drew some cherry blossoms onto watercolor paper and added the color using Gelato's and Faber-Castell Big Brush pen in Nougat (178).  I used the pen to do the outlining on the flowers and accents in the middle as well as on the branches.  See the second picture for a more detailed view of my hand drawn flowers.

A few rub-ons were added in the corner and also a rub-on butterfly was added along with a bit of doodling.  Love to doodle!

My post is getting pretty long so I will leave it at this for now.  Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions on the products used or my techniques.

Happy Spring everyone.

Lastly I took my glossy accents and added some dimension to the center of the flowers.
